Анотація: The stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896—1940) which are included into the collection are filled with adventures and romanticism. They display the integrated picture of the American society’s life in the Jazz Age which reveled in prosperity, squandered money and cherished the ambitious hopes. Анотація: In the proposed collection, the best novellas by the well-known American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896—1940) from such author’s collections as “Flappers and Philosophers”, “Tales of the Jazz Age”, “All the Sad Young Men” and “Taps at Reveille” are presented. The fate of the heroes of these works turns out in different ways. But describing the life of each of them the author asserts that: whatever the epoch a man lives in, the moral values remain invariable — domestic warmth, charity, sincerity, the ability of prizing everything one owns always promise every prospect of happiness. Whereas, false pride, arrogance, impertinence doom us to fruitless search for happy fate.

Анотація: “Cabbages and Kings” is the only novel by O. Henry (William Sydney Porter, 1862—1910), an acknowledged master of small prose. It consists of the short stories which, in picaresque-adventure manner, describe the life of the careless inhabitants of the imaginary “banana” republic of Anchuria lost in the tropical paradise of the Caribbean coast. This is a real Eldorado for the swindlers, dealers, and smugglers of every stripe and sample. In pursuit of easy profit they fall upon the brainiest jobberies and frauds often getting into comic situations, still coming unscathed out of the battle. Despite their adventurism, the heroes of the novel evoke sincere sympathy giving assurance that any life troubles can be overcome.

Анотація: Stephen Crane (1871—1900) is an American poet, prosaist, a newspaper reporter, representative of the school of impressionism in literature. Throughout his short life (he died before reaching the age of thirty), he created six novels, two books of verse, more than a hundred stories and sketches. In his writing Stephen Crane describes reality in the terms of a well-known triad: a lone person, an indifferent universe and a feeling of confrontation arising between them. He exerted great influence on the generations to come of the poets, novelists and short-story writers, such as E. Hemingway, W. Faulkner, T. Dreiser and others. The collection comprises some of the best stories by Stephen Crane which entered the gold reserves of American literature.
